Elusive sleep. This early morning I am on the bat schedule. Daisy is snoring now after previously looking up sleepily, wondering if we were going outside at 2 AM. There's decaf in the cup, and popular culture from Yahoo on the screen. Having tried everything else, maybe I should hang upside down and echolocate.

ReplyDelete-Fruit bats don't, as a rule, use echolocation.
-Bats hang upside down because their legs and wings are too weak to launch into flight.
-Have you tried sheep counting?
-According to an experiment conducted by researchers at Oxford University, counting sheep is actually an inferior means of inducing sleep. Subjects who instead imagined "a beach or a waterfall" were forced to expend more mental energy, and fell asleep faster than those asked to simply count sheep. Sleep, by the same token, could be achieved by any number of complex activities that expend mental energy.
-Perhaps the insomniacs among us have an excess of mental energy...the curse of the genius
