The Beginning!!
Hop on the train that takes us to Elk Park Trailhead.Wear sunglasses in case the cinders from the smokestack fly back into your eyes. Sit on the downwind side.
Try to get a seat by the window and the view of the waterside.
Think about the beauty, not the heavy backpack. After all attempts to lighten the load, the pack weighs 44 pounds at the start. It's all uphill from here for the next 4 miles today. And then a beautiful meadow, full of blooming Indian paintbrush, awaits our little tents.
